Good news for anyone planning or already in the process of obtaining DGNB certification: meteoviva has successfully completed its re-assessment by the DGNB and remains officially listed as a recognised service provider for the Buildings in Operation 2020 scheme.
In other words, our customers can continue to benefit directly from our accreditation. The points automatically credited through a partnership with meteoviva significantly simplify the path to certification. In particular, the step up from Bronze to Silver is easily done.
What is the DGNB System for Buildings in Operation 2020?
The DGNB System for Buildings in Operation (GiB 2020) is a certification framework that holistically assesses the sustainability performance of existing buildings. Unlike traditional new-build certifications, it focuses directly on ongoing operation, with nine criteria across the dimensions of ecology, economy and social aspects. The focus is on topics such as energy efficiency, indoor comfort, water consumption, operating costs and user behaviour.
The certification follows the Plan–Do–Check–Act management principle: it begins with a comprehensive analysis of the current state, primarily consumption, costs and environmental impacts, and derives concrete improvement measures from this. This results in building-specific transition plans that support a step-by-step progression towards climate neutrality.
Who is the intended audience for that system?
The system is versatile and suitable for both individual buildings and entire property portfolios. It is primarily aimed at:
- Asset managers, property managers and portfolio managers
- Investors such as banks, insurance companies and pension funds
- Facility managers and operators of existing properties
- Local authorities and municipal utilities with their own property portfolios
- Companies in the corporate real estate sector
What are the benefits?
- Value retention: Buildings with sustainability certification are more stable in their value, generate higher rental income and tenant satisfaction and reduce the risk of vacancies.
- Cost transparency: The portfolio analysis identifies potential savings in energy, water and operating costs
- ESG compliance: The certification supports reporting in accordance with the EU Taxonomy and optionally allows for additional ESG verification.
- Market positioning: A DGNB certificate signals an above-average level of sustainability to tenants, investors and banks.
- Continuous improvement: The system is not a one-off event, but a structured process with clear targets and evidence.
How meteoviva simplifies your certification process
As a recognised service provider, meteoviva ensures that certain DGNB criteria are met directly through our system, without auditors having to verify them separately. This significantly reduces the effort involved in certification from our customers’ end and ensures a solid baseline result.
meteoviva provides a strong foundation: the guaranteed points secure Bronze certification, and with the right scope, Silver can be achieved through our efforts alone. In collaboration with the relevant auditors, higher certification levels can be quickly attained as well on this basis through further measures and evidence.
What meteoviva guarantees and what additional potential is available:
| Aspect | Points | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Set points achieved with meteoviva climate | 41.5% | Automatically credited; ensure Bronze certification |
| Building inspection & sensor retrofitting (default setup) | up to 1.5% | Exact points depend on situation on site |
| Variable potential (simplified documentation) | up to 30.5% | Optional, depending on scope |
Your path to reaching Silver: three possible scenarios
The following scenarios outline the most efficient route from Bronze to Silver with the least possible additional effort. Depending on local conditions, the client’s commitment and their cooperation with the auditors, it is of course possible to achieve significantly more. Making full use of the potential offered by the simplified documentation process can lead to a compliance rate of up to 72% with meteoviva.
| Certification Level | Points required | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 35% or more | Entry level for existing buildings |
| Silver | 50% or more | Exceeds the legal standard, market-relevant |
| Gold | 65% or more | High standards of sustainability |
| Platinum | 80% or more | Highest level of certification |
Level 1 | Initial certification
Basic setup: Bronze guaranteed
The standard setup from meteoviva climate delivers a solid result on the first attempt at certification. A building inspection and the retrofitting of sensors or the connection of existing sensors are always part of the setup. Initial target agreements based on experience from the meteoviva portfolio form the foundation for recertification.
- 41.5% fixed points through meteoviva climate
- + up to 1.5% through building inspection (in 3 areas) and sensor retrofitting/connection (standard)
- Target agreements as the basis for recertification
Result: 43 % → Bronze guaranteed
Level 2a | Recertification
Go straight to Silver with proof of performance
If, following initial certification, performance data from ongoing operations is available, additional points are awarded during recertification for demonstrated achievement of targets – in terms of energy, operating costs and interior comfort. This means that Silver certification can be achieved with very simple measures.
- 43.5% base score (as in Level 1)
- + points for demonstrated achievement of targets (energy, costs, comfort)
- Evidence is already available from ongoing operation using meteoviva
Result: 52% → Silver
Level 2b | Initial certification – Recommendation
Aim for Silver right away – without having to prove achieved target
If you opt for an extended scope from the start, you can achieve Silver status at the time of the initial certification solely through measures supported by meteoviva. No proof of performance is required.
- 43.5% baseline (as in Level 1)
- + detailed water consumption recorded in the monitoring system
- + potential analysis for solar technology carried out
- + target agreement on indoor comfort with sensor retrofitting/activation (including humidity & indoor air quality)
- + user communication via the meteoviva cockpit (excerpts) promoted
Result: 50.2% → Silver on initial certification
