Corporate customers can benefit from fluctuating electricity prices. With energy supplier EnBW, meteoviva successfully tested a fully-automated demand side building management system.
Challenge
To control an office building so that energy consumption occurs at times when a lot of renewable and cheaper electricity is being fed into the grid. Avoiding annual load peaks to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions.
In 2021, meteoviva piloted a fully automated demand side management system using price forecasts from EnBW’s virtual power plant.
During the test, heating appliances’ electricity meters were linked to a smart electricity tariff that reflected day-ahead market prices. This made it easy to feed electricity prices along with local weather forecasts into the system.
meteoviva’s solution created a digital twin. Model-based simulation determined the optimum control of the system using input data. The system used preheating/precooling technology and thermodynamic flexibility to shift, smooth, or reduce load and consumption. This led to a 20% reduction in peak load and slashed energy costs by 34% in the first year of operation without compromising comfort levels.
